Ch. Ishwar Singh Kanya Mahavidyalaya

Preamble

Ch. Ishwar Singh Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Fatehpur Pundri, District Kaithal, Haryana was established in 1984 and got recognition under 2f in July 1990. It is affiliated to Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. It is a rural institution with a sprawling Campus covering 8 acres. The College has 9 departments with Faculty of Arts and Commerce. Teaching of Sanskrit on the one hand, Hindi and English on the other completes the circle so far as languages are concerned. The college offers two programmes at the undergraduate level. It is significant to note that the faculty is highly qualified in this rural college. Out of 26 teachers, 6 are Ph.Ds and 12 are M.Phils., others are postgraduate. 13 teachers are having permanent positions. There are five temporary and five part-time teachers. The College has seven members of administrative staff. Out of these four are on administrative duties, three on technical side.

The objective of the college is to promote quality education for the girls of rural area covering more than 25 km surroundings. The motto of the college is shrudha, gyan and karm.

The students are admitted at the undergraduate courses and have 496 students. Success rate at the undergraduate level is quite good, fairly good numbers of students are placed in first class. Success rate in commerce stream is nearly hundred percent.

The College follows the Annual system of examination under Kurukshtra University. It has a central Library, Computer Centre, sports facilities, canteen, welfare schemes, grievances redressal mechanism, vehicle parking facility, three buses with 40 seats capacity each, bank on the campus, generators and first aid room for the students and teachers is the highlight of the institutional infrastructure. The students are coming from the near by villages and pay nominal charges as bus fare. The college has collaborations with ICDS and Red Cross Society, Blood bank society and local educational institutions. Although it is an aided institution, yet it has generated an amount of more than rupees four lakh sixty four thousand through donations fund raising drives and sale of prospectus. It is worth mentioning the college is generating funds by renting buildings to banks, commercial organizations, hostel to sister institutions. The Management also runs a college of education.

 

CIS Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Pundri, Kaithal, Haryana volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council by submitting their self-study report on November 2002. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council constituted an Expert Committee to visit the College and validate its self-study report. The Peer Team comprises Dr. S.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (Punjab) as Chairperson, Dr. S. K. Dhawan, Jt. Director of Education (Colleges), Directorate of Education, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh); and Dr. M. D. Lawrence, Vice-Principal, Marathwada Mitra Mandal's College of Commerce, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune (Maharashtra) as Members.     Mr. Ganesh Hegde, Assistant Adviser, National Assessment and Accreditation Council successfully co-ordinated the entire programme. The team visited the college on 1st   and 2nd March 2003 to validate the self-study report submitted by the College to verify physically and infrastructural facilities of the College and the quality of its academic functioning including its management.  The peer team made a close scrutiny and analyzed the working vis-a-vis the self-study report submitted by the institution. The team also interacted with all sections of the teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, alumni, students also with the management of the college and the Principal. The team was also able to obtain an in-depth picture of the functioning efficiency as also the views of the different functionaries and the stakeholders. During the institutional visit, the team examined all relevant records and visited the different departments and laboratories, library, playgrounds, canteen and the different sub-units like the Women’s Cell, Child Care Centre (under vocational scheme of UGC), Controller of Examination Cell, NSS units. The interaction provided first-hand information about the working of the different units.   Based on the information collected, and keeping in mind the criteria prescribed by the NAAC for institutional assessment, the peer team has arrived at the following conclusion for the seven criteria as detailed below:

Criterion-wise Analysis

Criterion I : Curricular Aspects

The college is affiliated to Kurukshtra University and has to work within the constraint of affiliating system. The college provides under graduate courses in Arts and Commerce. Home Science and Music are the most sought after inter disciplinary subjects in the college. The college is able to meet its objective as per the local needs. The college provides the courses as designed by the university and does not have any horizontal mobility but has good number of elective options.

Through the curriculum the college fullfills it’s goals by way of imparting education to girls and making them self-reliant and empowered. The college has a mechanism of collecting feedback on various activities of the college and the out come of feed back is used for designing teaching programs. The college implements the changes in curriculum as and when recommended by the University. The college communicates feed back on programmes to academic council of the university.  The college takes 3 to 4 months to implement new programs. No New courses has been introduced in the last two years. However, the Management shows keen interest for starting need based courses. The home science students get hands on training in the area of child care at ICDS centers and DAV centenary school.

Criterion II : Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

The students are admitted on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examinations. Educationally disadvantaged sections are encouraged to study and college is organizing remedial coaching classes for SC/ ST students. The advanced learners are motivated with additional assignments and projects. Their knowledge and skill is judged during the course of their studies in the college. This is done by taking into consideration their performance in unit class tests.

At the beginning of the academic session the teachers are encouraged to divide the curriculum in three units and teach the same in three parts. The unit wise examinations are conducted. It is desirable that, the teachers may prepare teaching plan. The teachers are encouraged to use new teaching methods. Centralized media with audio-video, over head projector, television with VCR and VCP, tape recorder and sound system are used as teaching aids. The college follows the UGC norms for the academic and working days. The college takes keen interest in overall development of the girl students. Some of the departments have made efforts to display the wall magazines, to improve the communication skills of students. The students have participated in various sports and cultural events at the university, zonal and national level. The college has hosted thrice the inter-zonal youth festival. The Directorate of Higher Education, Haryana, honoured twelve students for their achievements in education. In the beginning of the session itself the students are communicated evaluation methods. They are judged as per the criterion laid down, and their performance is monitored on the basis of examination results. Educational tours and academic discussions are the highlights of the co-curricular activities. Special efforts are made by the college to improve the communication skill in English.

The teaching posts are filled as per University/State Govt. guidelines. These  posts are created as per the instructions of the Government. The college also employs the temporary/part time teachers to cope up with the needs of teaching load. The college encourages teachers to participate in conferences/seminars/workshops. Many extension lectures on different subjects related to recent trends are held in the course of the academic session. The teachers are assessed through the process of annual confidential report. The teachers are encouraged to perform better by way of  awards and recognition etc. Some of the teachers have given talks on current trends and musical performance in local radio.

Criterion III : Infrastructure and Learning Resources

The college has 8 acres of land. The college has adequate infrastructure for running the under graduate classes. The infrastructure is aesthetically designed and well maintained. The institution permits the use of college premises for social needs of the surrounding area. The College properly maintains its infrastructure like buildings, canteen, garden, playground, water supply, sanitation, power supply, furniture, library and laboratory equipments.  The college is employing adequate staff to take care of cleanliness and upkeeps of the campus. The NTT and B. Ed students are also permitted to use the infrastructure.

The college has an advisory committee on library and provides book bank facility to the students. The college proposes to computerize the library in near future. The college library functions from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. The college keeps on adding new books to library from time to time and has 7550 books. The library has computers and has reprographic facilities. Library is subscribing to some journals. The upkeep of books,  journals and periodicals is good. Environment of library is congenial for studies.

The Music department has a good collection of instruments, adequate for the practical sessions. These instruments are properly maintained.

The Home Science department has well furnished laboratory and has more than required equipments and is properly maintained. The college has six play grounds and has provision for indoor sports as well. The college provides training in yoga and judo to its students and also has adequate facilities of fitness equipments. The computer center works for six hours a day.  The computer center provides basic knowledge to B. Com students. The computers are maintained through authorised dealers. Though the college does not have any regular health center yet has worked out some arrangement for providing first aid and immediate attention at the time of need. The sports persons are encouraged by the way of providing incentive in cash and kind. The college has won regional and national prizes in sports. The college has two generators having the capacity of 7.5 and 6 kw, which takes care of additional / supplementary power needs.

The college has good canteen facility, which is well maintained and has good patronage of the students and staff.

Criterion IV : Student Support and Progression
The college is doing well in the field of girl education and has hardly 1% drop out rate. As the college caters to UG courses, there is no information with regard to students performance in NET, SET and other competitive examinations. The college brings out prospectus annually. This contains information about the members of governing body, list of staff members, admission procedure list of subjects available, fee structure, internal examination calendar, calendar of other activities, library rules and rules regarding eligibility for prizes and other information deemed fit for the students. The college provides various financial help to the students. Free education is provided to physically handicapped students. English speaking classes are conducted informally for improving the communication skills. Students representing the college in sports are provided with free meals and other essential food supplements. The college also has the earn while you learn scheme by the Govt. of Haryana for the benefit of students. The management and staff helps the poor students, by way of giving  financial assistance. 

The college has career guidance cell which offers career counseling for further study. Most of the students have been successful in getting employment in local educational institutions.

The students are also motivated to start their own enterprise.  The college does not have any alumni association. The college has the facilities for indoor and outdoor games, various clubs, audio video facilities and organizes various competition to enable students to hone up their abilities both academic and extra  curricular. The college has organized Zonal Youth Festivals many a times. The students have brought laurels to the college winning prizes in various items in Youth Festival and few students have been rewarded with cash prizes.
